‘Tis the season to be jolly…and fit! Let’s just go ahead and admit the obvious truth. Realistically, our sworn promises to dodge the holiday bulge may be a tougher challenge than we originally expected. Even the most disciplined of us may see our waistlines expanding. Seriously, is there anything more tempting than the smell of fresh, hot, delectable pies straight out of the oven? Between all those holiday cookies, stuffing, traveling, and gift shopping, there are a million excuses to wind up looking like Santa Claus himself! All hope is not lost though. Celebrate the holiday season and healthy habits through the end of the year with these simple fit tips!
We’re all aware of the added temptations that come along with this time of the year. Start planning and thinking about what you can do from now to stay on track with your fitness goals. Carve some time out of your schedule and take a walk, engage in a quick fit session at home, or say no to a sweet or two. Try scheduling out your training around your travel plans. Remember, even if your workouts aren’t exactly your routinely training sessions, some exercise is always better than none. Rather than leaving your fit sessions up to chance, pencil in your workouts as you would an important business meeting and don’t skip out on that mandatory appointment!
Indulge for a night, not an entire season
With all the holiday outings and leftovers to attend to, it can be so easy to splurge and overindulge night after night. It’s okay to have a one-night only pass for yourself, but don’t succumb to a full-blown season pass of it! Make smart choices day after day. If you have a carb-heavy meal one day, don’t skip your next few meals. Instead, counter it with a salad and hydrate with water to flush the bloat away. Limit the goodies you take home, store healthy snacks around the house, and don’t allow tempting holiday treats to become a staple within your household.
Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, skipping out on sleep to complete some last minute shopping, wrap presents, or attend numerous work and family parties isn’t going to do your waistline any good. Additionally, all that extra stress can take a serious toll on your sleep habits. Sleep deprivation combined with stress may contribute to weight gain, increased appetite, and irritability, which has the potential to be hard on your health. Instead of turning into an Ebenezer Scrooge, hit the sack at your normal bedtime to avoid the negative impacts of the season.
Find a Holiday Exercise Buddy
Share the holidays with your loved ones by enlisting them as part of your dynamic workout team! Encourage one another to fit in a gym sesh, pre-dinner workout, and even a powerwalk through the mall during your shopping trip. A daily walk with the family is a great way to bond and connect over some fun-filled moments together all while staying fit and healthy! You’re more likely to maintain your fitness goals when you’ve got a personal team of cheerleaders rooting you on.
Enjoy the Holidays!
It’s a beautiful time where family and friends all come together to celebrate a cheery time. Remember to enjoy the holidays! Instead of scarfing down your plate, savor the festive food and converse with the loved ones you haven’t seen in a while. Slow down and eat in moderation. Don’t restrict certain foods entirely as that plan can backlash and cause you to overindulge. Set portion limits and think about your end goal instead of seeking out instant gratification. Sampling some of your cravings will help you overlook those temptations. And don’t forget, even if you do fall off track, it’s okay! Just have a plan to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.
